The Bulk Discount, Measured: What Pack Size Does to Per-Shrimp Price
Singles, 5-packs, 10+1s, 25-packs — the same shrimp at very different per-animal prices. We measured the pack-size curve across every listing we track.

This site exists because sticker prices can't be compared across pack structures — a $33 "10+1" pack and a $6 single are different answers to "what does this shrimp cost?" Every listing we track is normalized to a per-shrimp price first (how). That normalization also lets us measure something buyers feel but rarely see quantified: exactly what buying in bulk does to the per-animal price.

As of September 12, 2026, the median single animal costs $10.00 while the median per-shrimp price in a 13–24 pack is $4.20. Most of the discount arrives by the 6–12 pack tier; beyond ~25 animals the curve flattens. Note this table compares the whole market's singles against the whole market's packs — expensive collector morphs sell as singles more often, which steepens the raw curve. The clean measurement: morphs where the same store shelf offers both a single animal and a 10+ pack today. Median premium for buying one at a time, across the 7 morphs where both exist: 41%.

When the single is still the right buy
- Breeding stock selection. Singles are often hand-picked or sold by sex; a pack is usually the breeder's choice. For a show line, paying the premium for chosen animals can be the point.
- Small tanks and trials. Ten shrimp is a real colony. If you're testing whether your water holds a sensitive Caridina line, one expensive scout can be cheaper than ten casualties — the genus difficulty gap is real.
- But for starting a colony, the pack wins on arithmetic. Shrimp colonies grow from groups; the per-animal saving compounds with the shipping math, since one box of 10 ships for the same cost as one box of 1. Our starter budget is priced on pack medians for exactly this reason.
Method and limits
Pack counts are read from each listing's own text ("10+1", "Pack of 25", bonus animals included); listings whose animal count can't be verified are excluded from per-shrimp statistics rather than guessed. Today's figures cover 552 in-stock listings across 7 vendors; the like-for-like table requires both cohorts at the same time, so it's a smaller, honest sample rather than a model.
